Ginataang Alimasag Recipe

Ginataang Alimasag, or crabs cooked in coconut milk, is a classic Filipino seafood dish that’s rich, creamy, and bursting with flavor. Known as alimango in Visayan terms, this recipe highlights the natural sweetness of crabs combined with the creamy richness of coconut milk, creating a dish that’s both indulgent and satisfying. The addition of spices like ginger, garlic, and chili adds a subtle heat and depth of flavor, making it a perfect balance of creamy and spicy. This dish is a must-try for anyone who loves seafood and the tropical taste of coconut.

What makes this recipe so special is its simplicity. The dish focuses on the natural flavors of the crab and coconut milk, without the need for additional vegetables or complex ingredients. However, if you prefer a more varied dish, you can easily customize it by adding vegetables like spinach, squash, or string beans. These additions not only enhance the nutritional value but also complement the creamy coconut sauce beautifully.

To prepare Ginataang Alimasag, the crabs are first cleaned and then simmered in a fragrant mixture of coconut milk, ginger, garlic, and chili. The coconut milk reduces into a thick, creamy sauce that coats the crab meat, infusing it with a rich and savory flavor. The result is a dish that’s hearty, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying, perfect for serving with steamed rice to soak up the delicious sauce.
