Nutritious Sayote Recipe with Chicken
Ginisang Sayote with Chicken, also known as sautéed chayote, is a simple, flavorful, and nutritious Filipino dish that’s both budget-friendly and easy to prepare. Sayote, as it’s called in the Philippines, is a versatile vegetable known internationally as chayote, mirliton, or pear squash. Its mild, slightly sweet flavor and crisp texture make it an excellent base for a variety of dishes. This recipe combines tender chicken with sautéed sayote, creating a wholesome meal that can be served as a main course or a side dish. It pairs wonderfully with fried or grilled dishes and is best enjoyed with a plate of steaming hot rice, making it a staple in Filipino households.
What makes Ginisang Sayote truly special is its adaptability. While this recipe features chicken, you can easily substitute it with other protein sources like pork or shrimp, depending on your preference. If using pork, keep in mind that it requires a longer cooking time to achieve the desired tenderness. The dish’s simplicity allows the natural flavors of the sayote and protein to shine, enhanced by the aromatic sautéing of garlic, onions, and tomatoes. The result is a light yet satisfying meal that’s packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
For those who may not have sayote readily available, this recipe is just as delicious when made with substitutes like upo (calabash) or green papaya. These alternatives offer a similar texture and absorb the flavors of the dish beautifully. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a beginner in the kitchen, this Ginisang Sayote recipe is straightforward and beginner-friendly, making it a great addition to your weekly meal rotation.
